Plan Ahead for your Dollar Store Merchandise Buying
When opening a dollar store it is important to carefully manage your dollar store merchandise purchases. It is important to always have the right items in-stock and waiting for your shoppers. On the other hand those opening a dollar store will soon discover shoppers are eager to see new items with every visit. As a result you must prioritize your purchasing from dollar store suppliers to guarantee core products are always in-stock, and that other merchandise arrives as it is needed. In this article I present 5 important considerations when buying replenishment merchandise for your store.
#1) Always replenish core products 1st.
Shoppers will develop a habit of coming to your store first for the core dollar store merchandise they must have. As a result you must carry just the right mix of those items at all times. Merchandise such as household cleaners, paper products, certain health and beauty items and paper products must always be in stock and waiting. When opening a dollar store you risk losing your most loyal shoppers by allowing these critical products to run out.
#2) Take advantage of specials.
Stay close to all of your dollar store suppliers. One of the results of this effort will be notification of upcoming sales and special pricing opportunities on the merchandise they carry. Expand your dollar store supplier list to include other supply companies you use less frequently. Once again study their special prices and always purchase core products, special one-time deals and impulse items when the price is right.
#3) Always maintain a good selection of impulse items.
Carrying a good selection of impulse items can be one of the keys to growing your dollar store sale levels. To maximize the sales associated with impulse items continually be on the lookout for items being advertised in popular publications. Also talk with other dollar retailers about the items that are selling for them. Be sure to ask dollar store suppliers about new hot sellers they have available as well.
#4) Keep plenty of complementary products in-stock. Display these items immediately next to each other. For example, adding a good selection of sponges, scrubbers and kitchen brushes right next to household cleaners will build sales for both cleaners and these complementary products.
#5) Seasonal, holiday and special event dollar store merchandise are important to overall sales.
Never underestimate the impact this category can have on your total annual sales. Be sure to carry the right holiday and special event merchandise to keep shoppers coming into your store. Move these items toward the top of your buying list as each holiday or special event approaches. Place them on display early.
